Maritime History

The harbour has a very narrow channel for ships to enter and leave. Since the 1830s ships have had to be towed in and out of the harbour by tugboats. This painting shows a steam powered paddle tug passing the Round House. You can see the North Pier on the left and South Breakwater on the right. All of these are still at the harbour entrance.
