Rubislaw Quarry

Painted by Charlton Watson this work captures the sense of great depth of Rubislaw Quarry. This granite quarry was first worked in the 18th century. The land was owned by Aberdeen Town Council. In 1788 the Council thought it was no good and sold the land. But Rubislaw Quarry turned out to be a success. Hundreds of thousands of tons of granite were quarried.
