Social History

Circa 1900-1930. A denture is a set of false teeth. Vulcanite is rubber which has been hardened using sulphur. The process is called vulcanization. Before vulcanite many other things had been used for false teeth: real human teeth, ox bones, ivory and even calves' teeth. Human teeth set in a base were called Waterloo Teeth. This was because teeth were taken from dead soldiers on the battlefield of Waterloo.
