Aberdeen Art Gallery - Balcony

At Aberdeen Art Gallery we have a strong collection of work by the Scottish Colourists. Several are usually on display on the Balcony alongside works by their English contemporaries.

The four Scottish artists S.J. Peploe , J.D. Fergusson, G.L. Hunter and F.C.B Cadell have achieved tremendous critical acclaim over the last few decades. Their art is bright, colourful and easily accessible. The Colourists influence is still apparent in Scottish painting today.

Landscape, Cassis - Samuel John Peploe RSA

This colourist oil painting is by Samuel John Peploe RSA, called Landscape, Cassis. Peoploe had an instinct for colour.  He painted Cassis, a small lively fishing port on the Côte d'Azur,in bright sunshine and brilliant light contrasted by deep shade and dusty heat. He does this chiefly through the use of foreground colour - the angled tree trunks are rich blue with chocolate and purple shadows against the warm tones of the sun-baked villa.
