Aberdeen Art Gallery - Contemporary Art

Contemporary art describes artworks which have been produced in the recent past. Aberdeen Art Gallery has a strong collection of contemporary art which you can see here and around the sculpture court.

When Alexander Macdonald donated his collection of artworks to Aberdeen Art Gallery he also gave money to buy works produced within twenty-five years of purchasing. Contemporary art is still at the forefront of our purchasing and exhibition priorities.

Over the last 100 years the Alexander Macdonald fund has been used to acquire notable works of contemporary art, including paintings by Paul Nash, Sir Stanley Spencer, Eric Ravillious and Dame Barbara Hepworth. More recently works by Gwen Hardie, Christopher Le Brun, Gilbert & George and Richard Long have also been bought with the income built up from Macdonald’s gift of money.
