Provost Skene's House - Painted Gallery

The Painted Gallery is something of a mystery. It contains one of the most important and unusual cycles of religious painting of Scotland. Ten painted panels represent the Life of Christ from the Annunciation of the Ascension. The painters are unknown. Very little information survives to indicate when, why and by whom the paintings were commissioned.

When Provost Skene's House was refurbished in 1951 the room was divided into two smaller rooms with a narrow chamber between them. Small traces of the original paintwork were visible but it was not until the false walls and ceiling were removed that the full painted ceiling was revealed.
