Discover the Regency Room
The Parlour, with its striking yellow sofa and curtains, is set out to reflect the refined taste and elegance of the first 30 years of the 19th century, known as the 'Regency Period'. Furnishing styles at this time were inspired by Classical ideas of perpendicular lines and proportions resulting from the archaeological discoveries at ancient sites like Herculaneum and Pompeii. The windows are hung with damask drapes and a swag pelmet to match the sofa.
This room is small and charming rather than grand, so the drapes have been kept relatively plain to reflect this. A light sofa table with two extending flaps sits in front of the sofa. This table could be moved without the assistance of servant, enabling the family to enjoy a more relaxed and informal setting.
