Victorian Staffordshire figures were made to mark people and events such as military campaigns and victorious battles, royal births and weddings, folk heroes, politicians and theatrical characters. They were colourful, charming and cheaply available from street markets and country fairs. They were made in Staffordshire, England, often by travelling potters who took their moulds with them as they travelled the country sometimes as far as Scotland.
